On Wednesday, May 24, 2006, fifth grade students were recognized for their completion on the DARE program. For the past 9 weeks, students have been instructed by Deputy Wayne on the dangers of alcohol and drugs. We appreciate his work and dedication to such an important program for our students.

Hands on Learning--Math and Science

Students use marshmallows and toothpicks to construct 3D geometric shapes. Tyler never knew math could be this fun! Whitney and Nathan concentrate on their figures.

We do break every once in a while for some birthday party fun.

Haden and Jeffrey record their scientific observations in their science journals after an experiment on states of matter and physical/chemical change.

Writing Time!

We all really enjoyed our time off for spring break! Whether we went on a trip or just lazed around the house, a week away from school is a nice thing!

We are now making final preps for the IOWA testing next week.

We are improving our writing and language skills by creating our own biographies. Students have written narratives describing important events in their lives. Editing and publishing skills have been practiced as well as typing skills, while using Word Pad in the computer lab. Each student created his/her own cover for their book. Book pages are illustrated with both drawings and photos of students. We are anxious to bind the work into book form.

Ready for the Benchmark!

Our class has worked hard all year with a goal in mind--learning all we can and then showing our stuff on the Benchmark testing! Since the first day of school, reading comprehension and math problem solving have been part of our daily routine. Last week we anxiously awaited the essay portion of the testing process and finished with great confidence! This week we are brushing up on test taking skills to help us in this home stretch since we will be taking the reading and math portions of the ACTAAP next week. But the year is far from over. During the last 9 weeks of school we will continue to focus on reading skills and problem solving, but we will do so through more hands on, indepth study of the science and social studies. We have a great 9 weeks ahead of us.

Homecoming 2006

Weiner School celebrated homecoming last Friday night, January 20, with festivities and basketball games. The Cardinals were victorious over the Swifton Pirates in all 3 games. Alex shows his Cardinal Spirit by sporting the numbers of the Sr. High boys' team.

Pajama day at Weiner Elementary

On Thursday, Dec. 15, our class participated in a school wide day of literacy. Students were allowed to wear PAJAMAS and spent the day involved in reading and writing activities. A break from our regular routine was much enjoyed by students, yet they were still engaged in learning. Who says school can't be fun?!!

School will resume on January 2, 2006. Enjoy the holidays.

Inside an Owl Pellet

Lance has carefully picked his apart and found bones of a vole skeleton. Students assembled the bones onto a diagram of a skeleton.

As part of our science unit on the study of living things, we dissected owl pellets? What exactly is on owl pellet you may wonder? Since birds do not have teeth, they swallow their food whole. The soft parts of their prey are swallowed and digested, but the waste portion of their meal, such as hair, feathers, or bones, are trapped in the bird's gullet within their throat. That waste is then reguritated by the bird, very similiar to a hairball a cat might cough up. Hence, owl pellets!! Not to worry, the pellets were ordered from a science supply company and were quite safe to handle. Each student had their own pellet to take apart. Each pellet contained the skeletal remains of a vole, a rodent very similiar to a small mouse. We then used a diagram to reconstruct the bones layout of the owl's prey.

Busy Week

On Monday of this week, Mrs. Ford was gone to a workshop in Little Rock to learn ways for us to improve on the writing portion of the Benchmark assessment, which we will be taking in February.

We are learning new technology skills in the computer lab by using the Word Pad program to type and print essays we wrote last week.

Thursday night will be parent/teacher conferences from 2:00-7:00pm. Students will not be in class on Friday! They are quite excited about that!

After reading "The BFG" by Roald Dahl, our class celebrated with a couple pitchers of "Frobscottle", the Big Friendly Giant's favorite drink. Kelby and Alex enjoyed the afternoon.

Nathan is hard at work helping to clean up the room at the end of the day.

Our class is getting in the routine of another school year. We have been reading books by the author Roald Dahl. So far we have read "The Enormous Crocodile" and "The BFG". We will be making "frobscottle" on Friday.

One of our goals for the year is for students to learn to post on the blog. I would like for them to be able to post both text and pictures. Technology is an important part of our frameworks curriculum.

Our school year has come to an end, and with it a sigh of relief from fifth graders everywhere! Have a great summer. Watch for posts of end of school pictures and happenings. I would like to post more pictures, but have had difficulty getting my posting software to work. I will keep trying, though.

Cells and Living Things

We are now studying a science unit on cell structure and living things, including plants and animals. We are doing research of the various animal groups.

Last week our class began writing our own biography. We will use the computer lab to type our text to be made into books.

Hands on Chemistry

On Friday, April 29, Weiner 5th graders got a hands on lesson related to our chemistry unit. Students had the opportunity to see what mixtures, physical change, and chemical change are and what those terms have to do with real life. Students were divided into groups and each group made their own PIZZA! Who says Science isn't fun?!
